What, in your opinion, has been the best adaptation of a novel? The Lord of the Rings, The Godfather, and Jaws springs instantly to my mind.

Yes! I love that film. When I was in high school/college, I would watch that and Pink Floyd's The Wall constantly! I actually got to see it on the big screen and the Indiana University Student Union one weekend. Glorious! ;D

I saw it for the first time when they re-released it in the cinemas here in Blighty... wow.
I actually prefer it to the book... I know it's a very faithful adaptation (I don't know what all the creative fuss was about), but in some versions of the book the story goes on where the protagonist Alex de Large is wanting to procreate, which to me is anti climax after the brutally brilliant dream sequence in the hospital when he is 'cured' of his 'cure'.
I'm with you there... brilliant film.

I have to say Cold Mountain, without a doubt.
I'm often upset and sorely disappointed when one of my beloved books is made into a movie (interview and queen isntantly come to mind) and it doesn't measure up to the book, but Cold Mountain. Wow.

The first adaptation of Richard Matheson's "I Am Legend" was wonderful. And in fact is my favorite movie off all time. "The Last Man On Earth" stars Vincent Price as the Robert (Morgan) Neville character. What a wonderful adaptation, though according to Richard Matheson himself, "They screwed it up". "I Am Legend" is now beginning to be adapted a third time and is to be released in 2006. I'm not much counting on it being a classic.

I think Omega Man is a hoot, though I seperate it from the greatness of the novel and the original film. Now, this new version you speak of...this is obviously not the American Legend film that was to star Arnold the Governator? Any word on who's directing/writing/staring?

Here's what was posted on "The Hive"
Variety reports that Francis Lawrence, the music-video veteran who made his feature debut with this year’s CONSTANTINE, will helm Warner Bros.’ long-mooted film version of Richard Matheson’s I AM LEGEND. The adaptation of Matheson’s classic, about one man struggling to survive in a Los Angeles populated by ghouls after a biological war, has been attached to directors including Ridley Scott and Michael Bay in the past, with actors like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kurt Russell and Will Smith attached to star. No cast has yet been set for the movie, which was scripted by Mark (THE CELL) Protosevich and will be produced by David Heyman, Akiva Goldsman, Neal Moritz and Erwin Stoff. The studio plans to get the film rolling in early 2006.
Like I said, I don't give it much of a chance.

And while I'm making a wish-list, I'd really like to see a "good" adaptation of Clive Barker's "Rawhead Rex". Not like the POS that was released years ago. My god what a waste of video tape. I would absolutely love to see a close adaptation of the short story. Sure, it will need fleshed out a bit, but please oh please, stay with the story.

Oh, come on...that urination scene (where it looks like they blew the cap off a hydrant) was awesome!
