so, i saw 'deaed silence' today. i have to make a couple confessions befpre i coontinue...i am not one of those die hard 'saw' fans. i actuially walked out of saw in the theatre...5 minutes before the end! yeah...im a jackass...anyway, i really thought the ending they were setting up was completely lame and predictable...yeah...
i finally went back and watched it. i have to admit that the mere fact that they were able to do something even remotely original was a feat in itself. apart from that, i dug the kineti c energy and style, and being that i consider myself pretty film savvy, the fact that they managed to pull one over on me to the extent that i left the theatre before the end is a feat in and of itself...
admission #2...i think ventriloquist dummies are scary. they creep me out...in fact, lifelike dolls in general get under my skin...for the record, so do clowns...
admission #3...i was intrigued by the trailer. it had some moments that actually creeped me out, which can be faked in a trailer, i know, but still, it at least hints of promise.
so, i saw it today. my impressions are as follows:
there are HUGE plot holes (oh dear...given that much of these involve a cemetary, that is a horrible pun...i sincerely apologize...), many of them vital to the plot...indeed, there are 3 points where the idiot plot was the only driving force...
one question...why carry a ventriloquist dummy around with you after your wife has been killed?
another involves a crawl space...
and there are plenty of times when the 'shout someones name loudly even though if they were here they would have answered by now' plot device comes into effect.
but most involve the dummy...
that said, there are some genuinely scary oments. the lady, mary shaw of the ubiquitous poem, is indeed really creepy in her ghost phase...seriously. i actually shouted a couple times...and i dont scare easily...
they do some nice visual stuff, but they do manage to take one of the creepiest things in doll lore, dummies moving on their own, and run it into the ground...
still, its not horrible...esp when you happen to walk out and a showing of 300 in digital just happens to be starting in 2 minutes...
still, its not completely horrible. and of course, there is a twist...which i actually guessed 10 minutes into the movie...honestly...if you see it, youll know what i mean...
anyway, i would give it a 4 out of 10. it certainly wont top anyones list of best films of 07, but when most horror movies do nothing but pump loud noises at you w/.the same lame shock attempts every single scene, its cool to have something genuinely frightening lookiong on film. horror fans will prob get a kick out of it. casual fans will prob be engaged enough sit still and watch.
if you hate horror movies, youll hate it...
ok, back to work for me.
